Web Design - The Importance Of Colours

We all know the importance of a professional lay out and high quality content to an effective web site, but did you know that the colour scheme you pick is also important?

We all associate colours with emotions and meanings subconsciously; colours affect people's moods and attitudes!

Colours are an important means of communication that we all instinctively understand, you need to ensure that the colours you use on your website compliment the message or theme of your site, not contradict it.

Colours can have a marked effect on your visitor's mood and decision making processes, correct use of colour can increase the visitor's confidence in the credibility of your web site or its content.

The careful choice of colours should play a big part in your web design. The three primary colours red, blue and yellow convey the strongest messages.

Red is the colour to choose if you want to convey passion, daring or persuasiveness; it also conveys a strong message of warning, danger and stop!

So if you are using red in your web design, be very careful about the message your choice of colour portrays. Red is perfect to convey messages such as "Don't miss out", "Order Now" and "Warning."

Blue is a colour that conveys trust, seriousness, calmness, success, confidence and calmness it is the perfect choice for business orientated web design.

A quick search of the web will show you just how many sites use variations of blue on their sites - it is one of the most popular and successful colour schemes.

Blue will help build the visitors confidence in the credibility and trustworthiness of your site. "About us", "Our Mission" and "Company History" are perfectly associated with blue.

Yellow conveys movement and action, it is excellent for use in logos and banners.

It is not recommended by many web designers that you use yellow to highlight text however, as you must remember that yellow can be extremely difficult to read on white and some other background colours.

Yellow is perfect for imparting the messages: "Going Fast", "Get it now", and "Hurry".

Black has always been a popular choice for many people who create personal websites. It can convey the messages "Modern" and "High Tech".

For your web design black can always be used with any words or phrases but be careful with its use as a backdrop colour as it is also very easily associated with "Hopelessness", "Depression" and other dark moods.

The secondary colours (colours made by mixing the primary colours of blue, red and yellow) also convey messages and moods.

Green conveys conservative emotions, money and security it can be used with phrases such as "Education", "We don't take risks with your money", "Secure" and "Order safely".

Purple has traditionally been associated with royalty and justice; purple can be used in your web design to convey "Honour", "Family", "Law", and "Fairness". Purple not used appropriately though can convey ambiguity and indisposition.

Colours and tones can also be audience specific, teenagers will be impressed with neon colours while turned off by neutral tones while a mature audience will appreciate the exact opposite colour scheme.

The intelligent and appropriate use of colour on your website will improve the effect of your web design and can dramatically improve the effectiveness of your site.
